The Dad Chronicles
Father’s day – Trying to align fathers of all shapes and
sizes this year was difficult, one was in hospital one was “over the water” and
one was chasing after the other two that’s not to say that I have three fathers
but I take my duties on father’s day seriously and extend it to grandfathers
too.
Although the day I am writing about is not over yet it has
still been the most eventful father’s day I’ve ever had – and it’s not even a day
meant for me. It all started at half one in the morning when my brother and mum
got back from visiting my granddad in the hospital, he had been admitted
yesterday, this sounds like he’d been in for a day, technically it was only
three hours had passed from that moment when we rang NHS direct and they sent
the ambulance.
“Nick” I half shouted, half croaked to my brother “What?” he
mumbled walking into my room “Where’ve you been? Do you know how granddad is? Has mum got us
anything to give dad tomorrow?” I quick fired the questions at him like they
were bullets, this irritated him so he replied with a tone in his voice “To visit Granddad in the hospital, they don’t
know what’s wrong but they’ve put him on a drip, yes mums sorted it.” And off
he stomped “Good” I said to nobody, I sighed with relief as I’d been worrying
all night. Despite my claims earlier I had kind of forgotten, I hadn’t had time
to get my dad a present and at that point If mum hadn’t have sorted it, I would
have had eight hours to sort it, that may seem like a long time but it was night
time, pitch black outside I couldn’t just go out in the middle of the night and
even if I did no shops are open and I’m not that good at crafts so I couldn’t make
him anything, anyway good old mum!. De-stressed I set my alarm for nine o’clock
and went to sleep. In this autobiography I will split my day into three
chronicles.
Chronicle one – The awakening (My Father)
Trrrillling startled awake I went through the usual weekend
morning questions: Where am I? Who am I? What am I? And what fool set that
alarm? After answering these questions my heart was saying get up and sort my
dad’s day out but my head was saying more sleep! My heart won, I reluctantly
got up and went to ask my dad what he wanted for breakfast, luckily for me my
dad’s head was saying the same thing as mine and his head had won. I went back
to bed and was awakened half an hour later by my mum with the presents. After
giving my dad his presents, making him breakfast and having a breakfast of wine
gums- a decision I will later regret. We managed to get up and prepare for the
day ahead.
Chronicle Two- The Hospital (Mums Father)
Thinking my mum had gone mad and was talking to herself I walked
into her room to find her talking to my uncle on the phone, they were arranging
to pick up my granddad from the hospital, at that point my dad walked into the
room and completely messed all the arrangements by offering to take her. Not
wanting to be left alone with my brother and his tutor I asked if I could go
with them. My mum said yes but stated that we had to get my granddad some
clothes first. After a mad dash my to grandparents’ house we finally found what
we needed and set off in the car. And that’s
how I found myself on the M57 to Fazakerley hospital. When we arrived, despite
my lack of sleep, my eagle eye vision
spotted my nan walking across on the foot path and I jogged over to meet her,
my mum was not far behind, my nan informed us that my granddad was not ready
yet. My Nan led us through endless corridors and eventually we were through to
the ward were we found Granddad with a physio therapist this meant that we couldn’t
see him yet so we were sent to the waiting room were my mum immediately started
a conversation with a volunteer, my nan read a magazine and I tried to fix my
nans phone that had somehow gotten a mind of its own and was turning its screen
upside down and itself on and off- at that point my stomach was protesting my chosen
breakfast of wine gums. Eventually the physio therapist was done and granddad
was dressed we took my grandparents home and got them settled. In all the excitement
we nearly forgot to give him his card and present ahh!
Chronicle three – The missing grandfather (Dad’s Dad)
After a delicious lunch, made all the better given my wine
gum breakfast, my dad went off to do some DIY, mum went to do some gardening (I
don’t even know what my brother was doing) I decided to do my homework so I sat
down at my desk and did my Spanish, science and most of my geography homework all
the while trying to think of something to write this essay about. During my
geography my dad calls us down to visit my other granddad, I drop everything and
run down the stairs whereas Nick takes a century to plod down the stairs. When we arrive at my dad’s dads house we find
that there’s no car, this is a sure sign there’s nobody in, bizarrely in its
place is a ginger cat sunbathing, we return home and try again an hour later
and then two hours after that only to find the same result and I still couldn’t
think about what to write this about! We returned again about half seven to
find no ginger cat and a red car, it turned out that they had been at my Uncle Stuarts
house over the water on the Wirral. After giving him his present we returned
home and had a delicious father’s day roast dinner. And that’s when it hit me I
should write about today! Once I had finished I ran upstairs and started typing.
